Building Perseverance

At Body Soul, we do our best to reinforce the fact that working out and staying fit are only part of the recipe of having a healthy life. Yes, physical fitness is extremely important when striving towards a healthier lifestyle, but there’s a key ingredient that many people tend to overlook, and that is mental toughness. In order to attain success, we must have the willingness and mental strength to push ourselves in the right direction. We must not fear obstacles. We must persevere.

Mental toughness can be gained through persevering; however, it’s important to note that perseverance isn’t something that’s gained overnight. Instead, it is something that is acquired over time and takes practice. So, how can we build perseverance? How can we learn to work through our obstacles that stand in our way of success? Below are some helpful tips.

Believe in yourself.

In order to have the courage and strength to persevere in every circumstance that’s met with trials and tribulations, you must, first and foremost, believe in yourself. Wake up every morning with a “go get it” attitude. Tell yourself that you have what it takes to succeed, even when the road seems long and tough. Lose your self-doubt and find the confidence that’s been buried deep inside you all these years. We often hear people say, “But how? These are all great ideas, but how can we suddenly just suppress our lack of confidence and gain a newfound perspective about ourselves?” Remember that your brain is a powerful tool, and through practice, you can train your brain to do anything. Thinking more positive thoughts will yield more positive outcomes.

Be committed.

Perseverance takes commitment. Once your goals have been set, promise yourself to commit to them wholeheartedly, regardless of what obstacle you might face. This is extremely important to remember because, in order to achieve great things in life, you must first be ready to endure the obstacles along the way. Obstacles are inevitable; however, what you might not realize is that these obstacles, when dealt with properly, are ultimately teaching you to persevere. If you are truly committed to a specific goal, you will work through anything to achieve it.

Have perspective.

When giving up feels like your only option left, stop for a moment to give yourself some perspective of the situation at hand. You may be feeling as though your obstacles are bigger than your strengths, but no obstacle is too difficult to overcome. Perseverance takes having the perspective to see that your obstacles are, and never will be, bigger than what you’re capable of.
