Avoid Weight Gain While on Vacation
It's so exciting to go away! The feeling of escaping the daily hustle and bustle is exhilarating. Vacations are a wonderful time, but they can also lead to unwanted weight gain. Fortunately, there are many ways to enjoy your time away and still fit into your clothes when you return. Here are some tips that have helped me and many of my clients:
Pre-Vacation Prep:
Stick to Your Meal Planning and Workouts: Try to drop a few pounds before your trip. This can give you a buffer for the extra calories you might consume while away.
Create a Flexible Meal Plan: You don't have to eat three big meals a day. Decide in advance which meal will be your "free" meal where you can indulge a bit more.
During Your Vacation:
Intermittent Fasting: Consider intermittent fasting to reduce overall calorie intake.
Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day. It helps keep you full and reduces the temptation to snack.
Start the Morning with a Workout/Movement Routine: A trainer can help you put together a quick routine to kickstart your day.
Walk as Much as Possible: Use walking as a means to explore your destination. Aim for 3-8 miles a day if possible.
Post-Vacation:
Have a Game Plan for a Reset: Plan your return to healthy eating and exercise before you even leave. Knowing you have a strategy can ease post-vacation guilt.
Reestablish Healthy Habits Quickly: Get back into your regular routine immediately upon returning, allowing for occasional indulgences on weekends.
Personal Experience:
This is a strategy I personally follow, and it has helped me enjoy vacations without the guilt. I recently returned from a wonderful 15-day vacation in Portugal. During my trip, I walked 3-8 miles a day, started each morning with a 20-30 minute mobility routine, and enjoyed a healthy breakfast. For lunch, I kept it light or sometimes skipped it altogether. I made sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day, and in the evenings, I allowed myself to eat whatever I wanted. When I came back home, I immediately returned to my healthy lifestyle, with weekends reserved for occasional cheats.
By following these tips, you can enjoy your vacation to the fullest while maintaining your fitness goals. Happy travels! ππͺ
